1 In the dance drama this character becomes infatuated with the pretty girl and trys to seduce her. He is an ugly old guy. The dots on his face are supposed to be pox marks or some sort of skin disease. The Yangju Pyeolsandae Nori is a very popular folk dance in Korean history. There are over 20 characters. Red, black, white and other bright colors help to identify the character, many of which appear to have deformed features. Most of them are meant to ridicule various professionals and other members of the upper class.
Beautifully carved and painted, there is the traditional cloth hood which pulls over the dancer¡¯s head and helps to secure the mask. Korean masks have a long tradition. They have had many uses. They were used in war, on both soldiers and their horses; ceremonially, for burial rites in jade and bronze and for shamanistic ceremonies to drive away evil spirits; to remember the faces of great historical figures in death masks; and in the arts, particularly in ritual dances, courtly, and theatrical plays.

This is one of 26 different characters in the Bongsan play that is performed in Hwanghae Province. For some reason this rich diversity is rarely seen. Instead, only three masks routinely show up on the market-- the Hahoe with its articulated jaw, the Black Monk, and the White Maiden. They are nice masks to own, but there is so much more from the many provincial cultures of Korea! There are twelve traditional characters in Hahoe talchum. The nine that still exist in the village are: Yangban (the aristocrat), Kaksi (the young woman or bride), Chung (the Buddhist monk), Choraengi (Yangban's clownish servant), Sonpi (the scholar), Imae (the foolish and jawless servant of Sonpi), Bune (the concubine), Baekjung (the murderous butcher), and Halmi (the old woman). The three missing masks are Chongkak (the bachelor), Byulchae (the tax collector) and Toktari (the old man).
