From the state of Guerrero, these Diablo or Devil masks are a contemporary fushion of the pre-Columbian traditional beliefs of the Indians of Mexico and the European devil which was introducted whent he Spanish Monks arrived in the 16th Century.
The predominant beliefs of the time believed in a dual nature in all beings - both the potential for good and evil, thus the concept of an all evil entity was very hard to convey. Mistakingly believing that the Indian gods with animal characteristics were evil, the Monks put horns on the animals and assumed that they were conveying the idea of evil. Consequently, the devil in Mexican mythology is a prankster or clown more than a figure of evil. Often a masked devil will go around during a fiesta telling jokes and grabbing women or children saying "The devil made me do it." This is regarded as great fun.

2 Mexican wrestling is great. It's like American wrestling, except they really hurt each other. And they wear colourful masks. And sombreros. Okay, not the sombreros. Anyway, eBayer 'dudleywigley' is offloading this genuine hand-made adult-size Mexican wrestling mask, which was bought in Mexico City. "What you get up to in it is none of my business," he says, hinting at heaven-knows-what. But it's ideal for lacing on, and then doing flying suplexes off the top of your wardrobe. Or is that just us? A favorite with our framers (and obviously with our client) was a pair of Venetian masks. These were mounted on a blue linen background. Next came a gold fillet which matches the frame, and a neutral matboard. The advantage of an open shadow box is that the viewer can see the mask directly and (if the owner is agreeable) even touch the mask and feel the exciting contours. The masks are mounted on a textured matboard, then there is a red-core black matboard for emphasis with a neutral matboard on top. This sets off the masks to full advantage. The frame is a lovely black "pitted" wood with an inner gold section.
