1 With the invention of bolts came the problem of how to prevent them from self-loosening. In a move to eradicate this loosening - most often a result of the vibration generated by the source to which the bolt is attached - the Coventry Group is proud to introduce Nord-Lock, a unique bolt-securing system that has been proven through rigorous testing to be the most effective way of securing nuts and bolts. Nord-Lock resists loosening caused by vibration and dynamic loads, and provides positive locking at low and high pre-load levels. Laboratory tests have shown that Nord-Lock securing washers are more effective in preventing self-loosening than nyloc nuts, cone lock nuts, locking wires and adhesives. The unique Nord-Lock system uses tension rather than the friction that often is used by other self-locking devices. On one side the Nord-Lock washers have cams with a rise greater than the pitch of the bolt, while on the other radial teeth are used to grip the securing nut and the surface to which it is fastened. As the major supplier of Nord-Lock self-securing washers, the Coventry Group strongly recommends this unique bolt securing system to those working in any industry where machinery is used and vibration is an issue. 2 NORD-LOCK produces a bolt securing system that does not use any traditional technique to secure the fastener, and yet offers a safe locking system. NORD-LOCK utilises tension instead of friction to secure a bolted joint. The proven wedge locking method meeting DIN 25201 is superior to any traditional method. The washer cam angle a is greater than the thread angle b. In addition, there are radial teeth on the opposite side. The washers are installed in pairs, cam face to cam face. When the bolt and/or nut is tightened the teeth grip and seat the mating surfaces. The NORD-LOCK washers are locked in place, allowing movement only across the face of the cams. Any loosening attempt of the bolt/nut to rotate loose is blocked by the wedge-locking effect of the cams. When un-tightening, sliding always occurs between the cam faces of the washers thereby avoiding scoring of the mating surface. Clamp load When faced with a problem joint, it is not surprising that the design engineer will not have an answer when asked about the clamp load. Calculations must be based on the existing conditions and these are very vague. The locking system is specifically designed for high-load engineering applications typically associated with heavy vibrations. Examples include rail, mining, agricultural and manufacturing equipment.
